May Camp 2015 Recap

Well, another May Camp has come and gone, and this may have been my favourite one ever! I am so thankful for our group - they are SO well behaved, respectful of the camp and rules, and kind to one another! We had great speakers and Citizens & Saints did an awesome job leading worship and keeping it centred on Jesus.

The churches this year were Bethany, Sunshine Ridge, Ebenezer, Chilliwack, Lakeview Heights (all veteran groups) and Faith Baptist, Faith Chinese, and Fraserview (the rookies). This was our biggest year by far with about 180 people!!

Here's a recap of the weekend - check back over the next week because I will post more photos and videos as they come in!

Friday:

Bethany arrived at camp shortly after 9pm. We started with Chapel - the band didn't start until Saturday so we played some games, watched the rules video, and Pastor Chris from Lakeview Heights introduced the weekend with his message - he gave a brief outline of the gospel and set up our theme of walking in Jesus. Then it was snack, some hangout time, and off to bed.

Saturday:

The weather this day was gorgeous! We started with breakfast, followed by Chapel and small groups. C&S played their first set and Pastor Jeff from Chilliwack preached on thankfulness - a great topic to set the tone for the weekend. Many small groups brainstormed lists of what they were thankful for.

Next up was some free time, then lunch. After lunch was free time or actvities for the afternoon. We had a group that went on a hike, another group that was in the gym for climbing wall and archery, and the third group went tubing. Anyone who didn't sign up was free to hang out at camp, go on a Starbucks run, play on the field, or use the waterfront. We had a lot of teens playing games on the field and a lot in the water. This was probably the best year for waterfront because Kelowna has had lots of hot weather to warm up the lake! There were canoes, kayaks, and paddleboards in plenty on the water.

Dinner followed free time, and after that was our next chapel session. Pastor Chris from Faith Baptist spoke on dealing with struggles and adversity and C&S lead an extra long worship set. As someone stated at the end of the weekend, it's almost a miracle to get Baptists dancing, and dance they did!

After chapel we had a night game offsite in a forest. The game was a bit complicated but sounded like a lot of fun! After that was snack, some evening free time, and bed.

Sunday:

We got to sleep in this morning because we did brunch instead. The weather was rainy in the morning but that didn't stop our group from being outside on the playground or field. After brunch, we had Chapel and I spoke on service and social justice - it was so great to speak on something I am very passionate about! If you haven't seen it yet, some of the websites, apps and resources I talked about have been posted in our May Campers group on Facebook (along with videos, photos, and posts!).

After Chapel and small groups was field games, which actually took place in the gym because of the earlier rain. Jenn from camp ran games for us which was great! Then some more afternoon free time - the sun even came out! We ended free time with our annual girls night and had fun taking group photos and getting ready together.

After dinner was our last Chapel with C&S. They did a great job with their final worship set! Pastor Isaac spoke about prayer and definitely lit a fire under many of us!! We had a great last small group session before the Hootenany (our talent show). Toby was the MC and did an awesome job! We had lots of acts - mostly serious, a few silly. The Ridge reunited their "Jon Bovi" tribute band to play us a few songs, and Rayna played guitar and sang in the show too. After that was bedtime snack and off to bed!

Monday:

Monday started with breakfast and then lots of packing before Chapel. At our final Chapel, Pastor Tim lead worship for us before all the youth pastors hosted a Q&A panel to answer our students' questions. Then was a big surprise for the teens - one of the girls at Sunshine Rdige was baptised! It was a great way to show our students what baptism is, and it was a first at camp. What a great way to end the weekend!! We took lots of group photos and then were off to have our last meal at camp. During lunch, Green Bay also gave away a free Jr. High camp (congrats Stephen from the Ridge - we know him because he came to our Survivor event!) and a free DTP - congrats to Corah for winning that one! DTP is short for Discipleship Training Program, the work program for grade 10-12 students during the summer.

Then it was time to pack up and head home. Ebenezer's bus "Rusty" broke down so we took home some of their kids and were able to continue building relationships during the drive. Despite some traffic, the bus made it back around 6:30pm and we all went home and slept!

Below is the recap video that Eric made for us. It's the long version - stay tuned for a shorter recap that will feature Ethan and Lowen's Go Pro footage!
