iConnect Sunday School - New Testament Overview

This week iConnect learned about the New Testament. This class was an overview of all the books - who wrote them, who the audience of each book was, the time period, message/theme, etc.

Here are the books:

Books of Gospel (good news):

  • Matthew - lots of details, main audience was the Jews
  • Mark - shortest gospel, main purpose was to spread the news about Jesus
  • Luke - historically written, focus on the Holy Spirit
  • John - focus on Jesus and why we need him, evangelism


Book of History (early church):

  • Acts - how the early church started and grew, written by Luke


Pauline Letters (letters written by Paul to various churches):

  • Romans: Christian theology
  • 1&2 Corinthians: advice on how to fix problems in church
  • Galatians: focus on free gift of salvation through Jesus (Pastor Stef is preaching through this book!)
  • Ephesians: unity in the body of Christ
  • Philippians: letter of encouragement and joy
  • Colossians: correcting bad theology/teachings
  • 1&2 Thessalonians: encouragement
  • 1&2 Timothy: pastoral letters - instruction manual to Timothy (Paul was his mentor)
  • Titus: pastoral letter, how to manage church
  • Philemon: forgiveness


General Letters (letters by others written to various churches):

  • Hebrews: How Jesus has fulfilled Old Testament law and is sufficient for all our needs
  • James: exposing hypcricy
  • 1&2 Peter: encouragement in times of persecution
  • 1, 2 & 3 John: love, truth, and avoiding false teaching
  • Jude: avoid evil and do good


Book of Prophecy:

  • Revelation: teachings for 7 local churches, Jesus' revelation to John about when He returns and what heaven will be like.
