Guest speaker at Alive! this week...

Well the retreat is done! Fun as weekends with teens can be, I sure do love my own bed! After I posted on Saturday, we had dinner, chapel, some free time, and then played a couple of rounds of Gorgon. On Sunday morning, we all had our last meal and got ready for church and the open house that happened during the potluck. Thanks to all of the leaders who could come out for the weekend! And a BIG thanks to Rachel, who was also in the kitchen this weekend and who was so willing to share the space with us and help us out when we cooked :)

The focus of the weekend was looking at the laws in the Old Testament - which ones we have to follow, which ones we don't, why God made the laws for his people, what we can learn from them even if we aren't required to follow them, and finally, how Jesus fulfilled the law perfectly - something humans couldn't do. The theme of 'Stand Up, Stand Out' meant that as Christians, we are to be a people 'set apart' from worldy motivations and desires, and instead focus on God, and what he did for us by sending Jesus to fulfill the laws.

This coming Friday is Alive! This week, we have a guest speaker - Pastor Stef! We're going to be running the evening a bit different from our usual Alive format. Instead of a message and then small groups, we'll be staying all together in the Attic and all students will have the opportunity to submit questions about Christianity and God for Pastor Stef to answer. While this is a good opportunity for the students who come regularly to learn more about Jesus, it's really aimed at teens that have no idea what Christianity is about, aren't familiar with what Jesus has done for us, are confused about the concept of God, or who have misconceptions about any of the above. We're really encouraging our teens to invite friends who could benefit from what Pastor Stef has to say! Parents, please encourage your teens to do this as well! We will also be doing some music on Friday, playing some games, and having snacks. It will be a laid back atmosphere and all questions are anonymous. Start inviting now!

Finally, we're having a costume party on Oct. 28. Start thinking about a creative costume now because we'll have tons of prizes to hand out for the best costumes of the night! Please remember that scary, violent, bloody/gory, evil, or revealing costumes are not allowed. If you aren't sure about what this means, please ask!
